How will the next millennium and the next century be? Does the century start in 2000 or 2001? Will there be a millennium bug with the readers of crazy dates? Will globalization lead the planet to a peaceful coexistence among nations, or to exhaustion of natural resources? What was the finale of the last hundred years and of the last two thousand years? Can you mix in the same link such disparate things as Nostradamus, Bill Gates, Christ, Coca-Cola, Allah, Mangueira, Bora-Bora, pitanga (a kind of cherry), Tokyo, vodka and the brothers of the paulista periphery?
It was thus, in the midst of that tidal wave of questions, that Gal Costa points her work in the direction of a safe harbor: Tom Jobim. An idea pursued for a while, an idea that would be put into practice immediately. There were those who considered anachronistic a singer like her, who had always agreed with the mistakes of her time, looking for refuge in the beautiful viola of Bossa Nova. It seemed that way, but it wasn’t.
Decision made, decision carried out. Director José Possi Neto is called on for the direction of the show, which would have an air of recital, with detailed illumination and a song list of the best of Jobim. Translucent costumes, diffuse scenario, arrangements made to highlight the voice of the interpreter.
The show opens in São Paulo, where also is recorded the double CD and a DVD. The album Gal Costa Canta Tom Jobim ao Vivo doesn’t follow the original script, by decision of producer Mazzola.
The highlights of this work are the excellent recordings of Derradeira Primavera, Bonita, and Por causa de Você. And because of this show, Gal traveled for a year overseas and to the great cities of Brazil, always singing to large audiences. And up there, Jobim approved of everything.
