Maria Bethânia, chosen by Nara Leão, arrived in Rio de Janeiro to star in the show Opinião. She came accompanied by her brother, composer and student of philosophy, by the name Caetano Veloso. The voice of Bethânia soon caused a rumble, becoming the talk of the town and generating a contract for the immediate recording of her first LP. The album with liner notes by Caetano, had on the last track of side A the participation – highly tuned and unknown – of singer Maria da Graça. The song Sol Negro is the starting point in the discography of Gal Costa. Still using the name Maria da Graça, she would subsequently record the single Eu Vim da Bahia, by Gilberto Gil and Sim, Foi Você by Caetano.
1965 also saw: Julie Andrews débuting worldwide in the film The Sound of Music, The Beatles also on the silver screen with Help, the arrival to Vietnam of the first North American troops for the beginning of one of the most prolonged wars of the twentieth century, Elis Regina with the Zimbo Trio, Roberto Carlos in the hit Splish Splash, Dorival Caymmi with the Quarteto em Cy in the carioca nightclub Zumzum, and General Castelo Branco installed in the presidency.
